Railway Station postcards have to be one of the most popular themes to collect. The image of steam trains in an animated branch line station can set the pulse racing for many postcard collectors. The popularity of railways in general along with the topographical connection makes them highly sought after. Many branch lines closed in the 1960’s and this also fuels demand for the best real photographic examples.
The problem for most collectors is the prices which continue to rise year after year. I have seen railway station postcards change hands for £200-£300 for high demand areas on specific lines. Some collectors have been waiting many years for a specific railway station postcard so they would naturally pay a premium to secure it should it come along. After 45-years of collecting I have never seen a real photographic postcard showing the interior of my station on a postcard taken by a local photographer? I have many examples of the exterior, but not the interior…very frustrating!
