If your like me, who is a collector or enthusiast of vintage postcards then hopefully the postcards we offer on this website will inspire you. There is a fascination of the rich history and picturesque landscapes of the United Kingdom. Thankfully, this was well documented by the Edwardian photographers of the day who took the time to record everything they thought would bring a sale.
Some of the poor and deprived areas were neglected because the chance of anyone buying these postcards from the local Post Office or Chemist shop was remote. But thankfully the majority of the topographical areas of the United Kingdom were covered with some amazing camera work. Anything from social history to transport, railway to Industry was covered by some very talented photographers such as E.A. Bragg of Cornwall and Broderick from the Isle of White to name a few.
I entered this fascinating hobby back in 1981 when a visit to a bric-a-brac stall on my local market where I discovered a real photographic postcard of Barton Swing Bridge on the Manchester Ship Canal. This view is about a mile from my home and apart from growing traffic and an exodus of ships on the canal it remains the same, although in need of restoration.
I bought every postcard he had at 10p-each. Put them in a tin box and then discovered antique fairs and specialist postcard fairs. That was my start of my travels by car and train to every corner of the UK. Hoping to find that hidden gem that would make the trip worthwhile. Nowadays the fairs are dwindling as people prefer to buy online from the comfort of their own home. That is a shame because there was something magical about searching through thousands of postcards by hand and meeting like minded collectors.
This business can get very addictive and I have certainly gone through the pain barrier at many fairs, especially Shepton Mallet where I would not stop from 10:00am until 6:00pm until the fair closed. I would then drive back to Manchester in the dark, completely exhausted but worth every minute!
Anyway, I hope you find something of interest to add to your collection on this website. It will take time to evolve and I am very picky with what I buy. If it doesn’t float my boat I don’t buy it! It has to capture my imagination and hopefully the collector will agree. If you have wants lists let me know. No promises, but I can have a look for you on my travels. If you have any questions just send me an email. If you have postcards to sell then you can use the contact page.
Happy Hunting, Mark Fynn
